Kyiv, Ukraine
2023 - ongoing
Documenting the lives of artists living in the city during the Russian full scale invasion.
Over the last two years, myself and a friend (fashion photographer
Marcus Lister) have been collaborating on a self-directed project that aims to explore the lives of young creatives, documenting how their process is affected, but not defined, by the war on Ukraine.
Having both spent time in Kyiv before the full scale invasion, we were drawn back to the city, compelled by a sense of urgency to document and share the experiences of the creative community, in what we feel is one of the most intensly vibrant hubs of Europe. In September 2023, we met with twelve artists, all of whom agreed to share their experiences with us for the project. Throughout the trip I filmed and recorded our surroundings and interactions, which I then edited into a film (link below).
In July 2024, we embarked on a second trip, meeting a further ten artists, all of whom we connected with via Instagram. I am in the editing process of the second film.
This project is one that’s very personal to me. The goal for this project
would be to create an exhibition, using moving image, portraits and
sound materials. The project’s purpose is to raise awareness of the
current conflict, not by focusing on the frontine, but by sharing a part
of the culture that they are trying to protect: the contemporary creative
scene
